What are watches?
For me, personally, watches are both an indulgence and a tool. Guess that's why I like Chronos and other tool watches most as is reflected in my collection.
Are they about telling the time? Sure, but then so is the clock on my desktop, the digital readout on my phone, and the wall clock.
Let's face it, how much jewelry is allowable in mainstream American society for a man? No much. You wear more than two rings (wedding and/or class) and you're perceived as something. You wear necklaces and that sends a different message. And on and on. But, you can wear a watch and have fairly wide latitude in which one.
So, time teller, tool, and jewelry. Can they become a fascination as well - sure. But I only know a few people that seem to have gone over the edge on that level (300+ watches - with 3-6 of the same model???).
Anyway, buy what you like, keep what you love, don't pay too much. And enjoy.

Re: What are watches?
Nicely put, Doctor.
I wear two rings, always my wedding, and occasionally another... not a class ring though. I always wear a necklace; a silver chain with a gold and silver cross. I almost always have a magnetic bracelet on my right wrist (it helps that majorly banged up joint). I will also occasionally wear a necklace of Southwest Native American origin, and a second bracelet of Tibetan/Nepalese origin, or one or another of American artists. But in this area, no one looks twice.
I use my watches as timing tools, as well (most are chrono's or divers). In that sense, by the style, or styles, one buys, all watches could be considered "fashion" pieces, yet tools at the same time. Unless, of course, one considers himself to be too manly for you, no matter what lines his walls.
I've bought the ones I loved, loved the ones I've kept, and have always paid less than MSRP.
And I enjoy them, too.

Tim,
I spoke in generalities for mainstream business/office/professional types. We all know that things in California are a bit.....different

Not so much, in reality... that's just a perception. I also have not worked in "mainstream business/office/professional" offices in 25 years. My "style" is one reason why I got out.

Re: What are watches?
I wear my wedding ring, the diamond ring given to me by my beautiful wife and a silver neckchain with buddah pendant given to me by my brother-in-law in Thailand. As for my watches, I lean more towards dive watches. I used to really like chronos but really never used the functions. They are much more than just telling time to me. I guess they could be an extension of my mood on some days. Maybe that's why Skully is on the wrist today.

Re: What are watches?
Watches are works of art that demonstrate to others both how good your taste is and how wealthy you are - fairly obvious.

At least you are extremely passionate about watches, as all they do is tell time.
