Some of you might recall....
that my son saved his sister from a Pitbull attack Christmas day 2008. He was honored by the local Court that heard the case with a Proclimation and award ceremony in May 2009. We were very touched that ALL the judges in our County Courthouse attended, the Sheriff's office did the Honor Guard, there were many people from local Scouting in attendance, etc. The best part is, of course, that my daughter was only mildly injuried. The judge who heard the case said he had done dozens of pitbull attack cases in the 20 years on the bench and that we were the first where an adult animal had fully latched on and released short of MAJOR force being applied - we were incredibly lucky.
Well, nearly 2 years later, the Boy Scouts finally got around to awarding my son the Heroism Medal. It had to be approved at the District level (took 2 weeks) the Council level (took 4 months) and at BSA National (which apparently took over a year). We are, again, very proud of my son and thankful for my daughter's continued health.

Congratz to your son Robert! I'm so happy that your daughter avoided being seriously injured because of her brother's love! Be proud Dad!

It's the way they're raised, and controlled. My friends (my age, even) have had pits all of the time I've known them (18+ years), and their dogs have always been the friendliest, sweetest temperments. I've seen worse from "mellow" breeds, ie, Labs. It comes down to the owner. My whole life, I was raised with German Shepards, Dobermans, and Rottweillers, with no problems.

I agree Tim. I have two pitbulls that are absolute babies. My ex-brother-in-law had a pitbull that would have laid his life down for the kids in our family. Unfortunately, the breed has a bad rap because of irresponsible owners. I can understand why people fear them. I'm leary when around someone elses pit.

I grew up with German Shephards and assorted other dogs, never a worry. We never had a worry or thought much of it until it attacked her. She was playing in the back yard with her new dolls in the little play house when it came under the fence, chased her down, tackled her, and latched onto her upper arm. I will say that the owners are irresponsible and ...well, enough said.
Thanks for all the kind words.

Don't get me started on that. He's just turning 10 and already its started. Doesn't hurt that he's our little Norwegian surprise (blond, blue eyes, big smile, pale skin, etc.) and a good soccer player. He's already got an older woman marking him off limits - a 5th grade girl keeps talking to him at sports events and making a point of calling out to him when she's with her friends.
Add this medal to it all and......

Thanks guys. I know this thread is a bit of a self-indulgence but I'm very proud of the little guy and so fortunate that my daughter got off with only a couple wounds. I appreciate the kind words and the tolerance of my non-watch posting.

Well, it is your site, and all.
Talking about your kids is not self-indulgent, talking about yourself, is... ya know what I mean?

There is no I in team. But seriously, I appreciate it and felt more comfortable sharing here than at work.
