Those are not avatars - they're Ranks. The higher your post count the higher your rank and corresponding picture within the WatchMen hieracrchy.

No, its a rank. So as you post count goes up so will who from the show you are ranked as.

TZ-UK has a similar system with Corp., Sgt., Lt, Capt, Col., etc. We're just using minor to leading characters from MadMen as the ranks.
